Understand the idea
Revenue growth is not the same as profit growth. Contribution per unit subtracts relevant variable costs from net selling revenue and helps assess how sales cover fixed costs. A business with negative contribution can lose more as volume rises unless its economics change. [S29] Acquisition and customer measures also need explicit definitions: real disclosures can use company-specific denominators and cost categories. Do not compare labels without reading them. [S30]
Worked example
For an invented D2C order, net revenue is INR 600; product, fulfillment, and expected return costs total INR 450, leaving INR 150 before acquisition and fixed costs. If acquisition costs INR 240 per new buyer, the first order leaves an INR 90 gap. A second similarly profitable order may cover it, but only if repeat purchase and timing actually support that expectation.
Where the idea stops
Contribution is not net profit or cash flow. Long-run customer-value estimates can hide weak retention, omitted costs, and slow payback. Historical company disclosures are examples of measurement, not current investment recommendations.
