Understand the idea
A constraint narrows the space of possible solutions. That can prompt exploration beyond obvious options, but it can also remove essential resources or create excessive pressure. The research review separates constraints rather than treating them as one universal force. Their effects depend on what is constrained and the processes through which people respond. [S13] A productive design question is therefore which limit improves search without destroying the ability to implement a worthwhile idea.
Worked example
Design a campus-event poster using only two colors and twelve words. Compare that brief with a ten-minute deadline plus no access to the event details. Both are constraints, but the first structures expression while the second may prevent competent execution.
Where the idea stops
The conclusion is not that scarcity is always good. A constraint that supports exploration for one task or person can undermine another. [S13]
