Why rereading can feel better than it works

How can you tell whether a lesson is familiar or retrievable?

Understand the idea

Fluent rereading can make material feel familiar without showing that it can be recalled or applied. A broad review rated practice testing and distributed practice highly across many learning conditions. [S22, S23] Retrieval practice means trying to bring information to mind; spacing distributes encounters over time. They are related but distinct. A well-designed learning loop combines an independent attempt, corrective feedback, and later retrieval rather than rewarding exposure alone.

Worked example

Read a short concept, close it, and explain its mechanism. Reopen it to locate a missing step. Attempt a different example tomorrow. Compare this with immediately recognizing the correct answer while the explanation remains on screen. This exercise illustrates a distinction; it is not proof of improvement in one person.

Where the idea stops

No single interval fits every goal. Retrieval alone cannot repair a misunderstood explanation without appropriate instruction and feedback; recognition tests can also be useful when designed well. [S22, S23]

Test the idea

Design a one-week learning plan for elasticity that includes explanation, retrieval, feedback, and a new application.

  1. What can you do without seeing the lesson?
  2. How is spacing different from repeatedly testing in one sitting?
  3. What feedback would turn an error into a useful next attempt?
